The UAE Golden Visa is a 10-year renewable residency visa designed for exceptional talent. Unlike a standard UAE residence visa β€” which is tied to an employer and lapses after 6 months abroad β€” the Golden Visa is self-sponsored, covers your entire family, and gives you the freedom to live, work, and build in the UAE on your own terms.

Since its introduction, the program has expanded significantly. As of 2026, four main talent categories are open: academics and researchers, artists and cultural figures, creative and media professionals, and sports professionals β€” including competitive e-sports players.

This guide covers everything you need to know: eligibility by category, the documents required, the step-by-step process, and common questions we hear from clients at Unican.

Who this guide is for: Professionals already living in the UAE who want long-term security, and international talent considering relocating to Dubai who want to understand the Golden Visa pathway before making the move.

What is the UAE Golden Visa?

The UAE Golden Visa (officially the Long-Term Residence Visa) was introduced by the UAE government in 2019 and significantly expanded in 2022. It grants eligible individuals a 10-year UAE residency permit that is renewable and self-sponsored β€” meaning you do not need an employer or local sponsor to maintain it.

Key benefits include:

  • 10-year renewable residency β€” compared to the standard 2-year employer-tied visa
  • No employer sponsor required β€” you can change jobs, freelance, or start a business without visa complications
  • Full family coverage β€” spouse, children of all ages (including adult sons), and domestic staff
  • No 6-month absence rule β€” standard UAE visas lapse if you leave for 6+ months; the Golden Visa has no such restriction
  • Full banking and business rights β€” open accounts, own property, establish companies

The 4 Talent Categories

To qualify for the Golden Visa under a talent category, you must fall into one of the four tracks below. Each has its own eligibility criteria and endorsing authority.

Academics & Researchers
Distinguished university faculty and accredited researchers with documented academic impact. Endorsed by the Emirates Scientists Council.

Eligibility Requirements by Category

Academics & Researchers

This is the most criteria-driven of the four tracks. To qualify you generally need:

  • A Master's degree or PhD from a recognised university (or foreign equivalent with equivalency assessment)
  • An H-index of 10 or above on Scopus β€” this measures how many of your publications have been cited at least that many times
  • A Field Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) of 1.0 or above β€” indicating your work is cited at or above the average for your field
  • Formal endorsement from the Emirates Scientists Council
H-index below 10? If your H-index is below the threshold, don't assume you're ineligible. USCIS evaluates profiles holistically and alternative evidence of academic impact may be considered. Speak to a consultant before ruling yourself out.

Art & Culture

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating recognised artistic achievement
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in your artistic or cultural field
  • Evidence of national or international recognition β€” awards, institutional affiliations, critical recognition
  • Formal recommendation from the Ministry of Culture and Youth

Creative & Media

  • Published creative or media output with demonstrable public reach
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in media, journalism, content creation, or related fields
  • Digital content creators must hold a UAE Media Licence from the National Media Council
  • Formal recommendation from the Ministry of Culture and Youth

Sports Professionals

  • Documented achievements at national or international level
  • Full career record including competitions, rankings, contracts, and official results
  • E-sports players must be aged 25 or above
  • Formal endorsement from the UAE General Authority of Sports

Do I Need to Be Living in the UAE to Apply?

Not necessarily. Applications can be initiated from outside the UAE in most cases. However, certain steps β€” including biometrics, Emirates ID issuance, and medical screening β€” require a physical visit to the UAE. If you are applying from abroad, we advise on the most efficient way to structure your travel around the process.

Can I Sponsor My Family?

Yes. Your Golden Visa allows you to sponsor your spouse, children of all ages (there is no age restriction for male sons, unlike standard UAE residency), and domestic staff. Each family member is issued their own 10-year residency under your sponsorship.

How Long Does the Process Take?

The total timeline from starting your application to receiving the Golden Visa typically ranges from 8 to 16 weeks, depending on the category and how quickly the endorsing authority processes the recommendation. The Academics track can take longer due to the Emirates Scientists Council review. Sports and Creative/Media tend to move faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the UAE Golden Visa a pathway to citizenship? +
No. The Golden Visa is a long-term residency permit, not a citizenship pathway. The UAE does not offer naturalisation through residency for most expats. However, it provides stable long-term residency that can be renewed indefinitely.
Can I hold a Golden Visa and work for a UAE employer at the same time? +
Yes. The Golden Visa does not prevent you from being employed. It simply means your residency is no longer tied to your employer β€” you can change jobs, start a business, or freelance without affecting your visa status.
What happens to my Golden Visa if I leave the UAE for an extended period? +
Unlike standard UAE visas, the Golden Visa does not lapse due to extended absence. You can live outside the UAE for extended periods without losing your residency status. This makes it attractive for professionals who travel frequently or spend time abroad.
I am a social media influencer β€” do I qualify under the Creative & Media category? +
Potentially yes, but you would need to hold a valid UAE Media Licence issued by the National Media Council. This is a requirement specifically for digital content creators and influencers. Without the licence, the application cannot proceed under this track.
Can I apply for the Golden Visa without using a consultant? +
Technically yes, but the process involves coordinating with UAE government authorities, obtaining formal endorsements, and preparing documentation that meets specific evidentiary standards. Most successful applicants work with a licensed consultant to ensure the application is structured correctly from the start.
