Step-by-Step Process

From application to authorization

1
Degree Equivalency Assessment
Before applying for the visa, your dental degree is submitted to the Danish Patient Safety Authority (Styrelsen for Patientsikkerhed) for equivalency assessment. This is completed from your home country and determines which supplementary requirements apply to your qualification.
~6 months
2
Apply for the 3-Year Residence Visa
Once the equivalency assessment is complete, you apply for a residence visa through SIRI (Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration). This visa covers you, your spouse, and children under 18 — allowing the whole family to enter and reside in Denmark for 3 years.
2–3 months processing
3
Enter Denmark & Begin Language Study
You and your family enter Denmark on the 3-year residence visa. During this period, you enrol in Danish language classes and work towards Prøve i dansk 3. Required scores: Written 10, Oral 7, Listening 7. Language learning typically takes 12–18 months from beginner level.
12–18 months
4
Work Rights During the 3 Years
Both you and your spouse are permitted to work full-time or part-time in Denmark during the 3-year residence period — you do not need to wait for full authorization before earning income.
From day of entry
5
Three Dental Examinations at UCPH
Complete three dental competency examinations at the University of Copenhagen — covering clinical dentistry, radiography, and dental science. Exams are scheduled across separate sessions within the 3-year period. Re-sits are permitted if needed.
Within the 3-year visa
6
Adaptation Employment
Complete a supervised clinical placement at a Danish dental practice or public clinic. This practical period is required before final authorization is granted by the Danish Patient Safety Authority.
6–12 months
7
Full Danish Authorization
Upon passing all exams, completing the language requirement, and finishing adaptation employment, the Danish Patient Safety Authority grants full dental authorization — entitling you to practice independently in Denmark and across the EU.
Full EU authorization
8
Permanent Residence
After sufficient continuous legal residence in Denmark, you may apply for permanent residence — and eventually Danish citizenship, one of the world's most valuable passports.

Why Denmark

Key advantages

🏥
No Job Offer to Start
Unlike most EU healthcare pathways, Denmark's XG1 route does not require a job offer to begin the authorization process. You can arrive and prepare your exams before securing employment.
💶
Top-Tier Salaries
Danish dentists are among the highest-paid in Europe. Authorized dentists can work in private practice, public clinics, or establish their own clinic once fully qualified.
🇪🇺
EU-Wide Authorization
Danish dental authorization grants the right to practice across the European Union under the EU's mutual recognition of professional qualifications directive.
👨‍👩‍👧
Family Included
Your spouse and dependent children can join you in Denmark under family reunification provisions. Children have access to Denmark's free education system.
🏡
Path to Permanent Residence
The XG1 permit leads to a standard residence permit upon authorization, and eventually to permanent residence and Danish citizenship — one of the world's most valuable passports.
🌍
Government-Backed Process
The authorization route is a formal, fully regulated government process administered by the Danish Patient Safety Authority — not a private scheme.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need a job offer before applying?+
No. The XG1 qualification permit is specifically designed to allow foreign healthcare professionals to enter Denmark and complete authorization requirements without holding a job offer. You can begin language study and examination preparation before securing employment.
How long does the full process take?+
The degree equivalency assessment takes approximately 6 months and is completed from your home country. After entering Denmark on the 3-year residence visa, language learning typically takes 12–18 months. The dental examinations and adaptation employment are completed within the 3-year visa period. Total timeline from start to full authorization is typically 3–4 years.
What if my degree is from a suspended country?+
The suspension applies specifically to the institution country of your degree — not your nationality. If your degree is from one of the 8 suspended countries, new authorization applications are currently not being accepted. Contact us to assess whether any alternative routes apply to your situation.
Can I bring my family to Denmark?+
Yes. Once you hold the XG1 permit, you can apply for family reunification to bring your spouse and dependent children to Denmark. Children under 18 are entitled to free education in Danish public schools.
